Stock Selection Mechanism

  • ◆
The Shortlist scores every stock daily (on a scale of 1 to 10) across 20+ quantitative criteria - fundamentals, momentum, forward signals, and market sentiment - showing how each stock ranks on each criterion. AI then explains based on data. The higher the score, the stronger the stock measures today on these four pillars relative to the rest of our coverage. A high score is a filter, not a recommendation. Use the research features alongside it before deciding anything. Only stocks above the threshold are shown. AI adds explanations; scoring itself is purely quantitative. These metrics are widely used in quantitative equity screening. A score describes how a stock measures on them today; it is not a forecast. Any score based on present metrics is a quality filter usually relevant for current market conditions and is not a replacement for qualitative research and independent decision making. The score helps you cut the noise and make decisions quicker but is not investment advice.

  • ◆Strong Performers surfaces stocks with solid fundamentals that also show strong recent price momentum.
  • ◆High Potential surfaces stocks with strong underlying fundamentals whose momentum is only starting to turn: lower-priced names showing improving signals, not top-scoring yet.
  • ◆Less is more. The Shortlist is designed to surface strong candidates without overwhelming you with endless options and selection — a focused starting point, not a data dump. For best results, concentrate on sectors or themes you know well, and try running both modes together to surface a broader set of names worth researching.

Use Your Shortlist

  • ◆Keep track of your Shortlist — save stocks that catch your eye directly from the shortlist. Your watchlist keeps them in one place so you can follow their progress over time and revisit them whenever you're ready to dig deeper.
  • ◆Set up notifications — get notified automatically when specific stocks you care about make it onto the shortlist in the segments you follow. No need to check every day — we'll tell you when something relevant shows up.
  • ◆Access the day's top scores — view the day's highest-scoring stocks, broken down by segment and selection mode, so you always have a clear, current snapshot of what's rising to the top.
  • ◆Search scores for specific stocks — look up any ticker in our universe to see its current score, sub-scores, and key metrics — even if it didn't make today's shortlist. Useful for sanity-checking a name you're already following.

✦ Some features and capabilities are only available on selected paid plans.

The Stock Card

  • ◆The stock card is a summarized view of all the key fields for any selected stock — score, price history, returns, valuation, growth, margins and more, at a glance.
  • ◆Click Deep Research for a written brief, researched live across trusted sources: what materially changed, recent price action including what management said on the latest earnings call, the bull and bear cases, and what to watch. Read it as a summary or in full. Reports are shared between users and refreshed on earnings, a material score move, or after three weeks.
  • ◆At the end of a report, click Review for a short update on whether the report's thesis still holds: how the sector has traded, how the price has moved, and anything material since it was written. It is a freshness check on the report, not a rating or recommendation.
  • ◆Click More info for Shorty, our AI agent — peers, news, a bull-and-bear read, how the score was built, or any question of your own.
  • ◆Click Considerations and Beyond the Numbers to understand further insight — both quantitative and qualitative — about the stock at a glance.

Terminology

New to investing? Below are the key terms you'll come across in The Shortlist — explained in plain English, no jargon required.

  • ◆P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings) — how much investors are paying for every dollar of a company's earnings. A higher P/E often reflects high growth expectations; a very high one may mean the stock is priced expensively relative to what the company actually earns.
  • ◆Market Cap (Market Capitalisation) — the total market value of all a company's shares. Larger companies ($50B+) tend to be more established and stable; smaller ones may carry more growth potential alongside higher risk.
  • ◆Free Cash Flow (FCF) — the cash a company has left after paying its operating costs and capital investments. Strong FCF means a company can fund growth, return cash to shareholders, or weather downturns without relying on debt.
  • ◆Revenue Growth (YoY) — how much a company's sales grew compared to the same period last year. Consistent growth is typically a sign of a healthy, expanding business.
  • ◆Profit Margin & Margin Expansion — the percentage of revenue a company keeps as profit. When margins are expanding, the company is becoming more efficient and profitable over time — generally a positive signal.
  • ◆Momentum — how strongly a stock's price has been trending relative to the broader market. High momentum means the stock has been outperforming recently, which is one of the factors our score measures.
  • ◆52-Week High — the highest price a stock has traded at over the past year. A stock near its 52-week high is often showing strength; one far below it may be recovering — or still falling.
  • ◆SPY / S&P 500 — the S&P 500 is an index of the 500 largest US-listed companies and the most widely used benchmark for the stock market. SPY is the ETF that tracks it. We use it to measure how a stock is performing relative to the broader market.
  • ◆Fundamentals — the underlying financial health of a company: revenue, earnings, cash flow, and growth trends. Strong fundamentals suggest a company is built on solid ground, not just market sentiment.
  • ◆Forward Earnings — analyst estimates of a company's future earnings. Strong forward earnings expectations reflect what analysts currently expect — one of the signals we factor into our scoring.
